Pittsburgh Ear Associates have been training Otology Fellows since 2002. The fellowship is dedicated solely to training in the clinical and surgical management of hearing, balance, facial nerve, and skull base disorders. With over 400 cases annually our fellows gain expert level experience with chronic otitis media surgery, cochlear implantation, middle ear implants, osseointegrated implants, and otosclerosis surgery. Although one year Otology Fellows cannot sit for the CAQ in Neurotology, our practice contains a high volume of skull base surgery allowing the Fellow to gain an understanding for intracranial procedures. The Fellow will perform these procedures as part of their training. Call is otology only, allowing recent graduates to concentrate on the study of otologic disorders and prepare for the general board examination. Research opportunities are readily available and all of our fellows have made valuable contributions to the field through publications and/or textbook chapters. Resources include an in house 10 station temporal bone lab, balance center, and fully complimented audiology department.
The primary site for the fellowship is at Allegheny General Hospital, a part of the large Allegheny Health Network. The practice pulls referrals from a wide region providing a variety of pathology. Pittsburgh Ear Associates also trains residents from Temple University and Ohio University allowing the fellow to develop teaching skills. The didactic schedule is modified for each fellow to provide maximum benefit. Research has been completed by all of our fellows, but our emphasis is to improve the clinical skills for each trainee.
Pittsburgh is an affordable city with much to offer. Pittsburgh and its suburbs are consistently rated highly on the “Most Livable City” lists. Its central location allows for easy access to the U.S. through an international airport. Most fellows who come with spouses have had little trouble finding their spouse employment during their stay.
