Michael TeixidoMichael Teixido is an otolaryngologist with a special interest in medical and surgical conditions that affect hearing and balance.  He was born in Wilmington, Delaware and developed an interest in ear surgery because of a hereditary hearing condition in his family.  He actively pursues his goals to advance the study and understanding of problems involving hearing, balance and general otolaryngology through his participation in many national professional organizations and through frequent lectures to his professional colleagues and the public. In collaboration with the Delaware Biotechnical Institute Dr.Teixido has created unique 3D materials for teaching anatomy, surgery, and pathophysiology.

Dr. Teixido has an active neurotologic practice. He is the director of the Delaware Otologic Medicine and Surgery Fellowship, director of the Balance and Mobility center of Christiana Care, and co-director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant and Auditory Rehabilitation Program of the duPont Hospital for Children. He teaches residents in otolaryngology regularly at Thomas Jefferson, University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dizziness: Is it Meniere’s or Migraine, or both?

I wanted to share some of my approach to dizziness.  There is increasing interest among ENT physicians in the connection between migraine and Meniere’s disease. Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear characterized by episodic fullness, tinnitus (ringing), hearing loss, and vertigo whose cause is poorly understood. While the prevalence of migraine in the US population is 13%, the prevalence of migraine in patients with Meniere’s disease is 56%, and the prevalence of migraine in patients with bilateral Meniere’s disease is 85%….

A one-year Fellowship in otology is being offered in response to the need in our specialty for increased clinical competence in otology at the graduating resident level.  Most residents feel their clinical skills in surgical and medical otology are limited and, while they do not have aspirations to practice neurotology, do not feel adequately prepared to confidently offer surgical treatment of chronic ear disease, otosclerosis or feel prepared to establish adult or pediatric cochlear implant programs in their future communities of practice….
